Robert Joseph McClanahan
Bob was born a twin at Rainy River but only lived there two years before moving to Haileybury. He was taught by his Dad in Grade 8 at Haileybury Public School. His high school was two years in Haileybury, two years in North Bay and one year in Cobalt. He went to McMaster University, 1947- 51 for a B.A. in Science, then to the University of Western Ontario to get an M.Sc. in Entomology. All his working years, 1953 - 1986, were with Agriculture Canada; first at Chatham, Ont., then at the Harrow Research Station. He specialized in control of vegetable insects, with emphasis on biological control.
Bob and Erla, born at Stouffville, Ont., met at UWO and were married at Ringwood Christian Church, near Stouffville on April 21, 1956. From Sept, 1959 to Sept., 1961, the family were at East Lansing, Mich. while Bob worked on a Ph.D. in Entomology. After nearly 35 years with Agriculture Canada (including summer student time), Bob retired in Sept., 1986 and continued to live at 1242 Oxford Ave., Kingsville.

In his retirement years Bob kept busy with many things. He helped Wayne build a house in 1989, was active in church affairs and church upkeep. Hobbies were carpentry, bird watching, stamp collecting and swimming. He was a Hospice volunteer, visiting once a week with cancer patients (1992-1999). He was a Stephen Minister and Stephen Leader for 10 years. Then he continued pastoral care as Lay Hospital Visitor.
